Quote from Salman Rushdie´s "Satanic Verses": What is the oposite of faith ? Not disbelief, too final too much a belief in itself. The oposite of faith is DOUBT."

Your "leap of faith" use is also wrong, even by religious standards. Making a leap of faith is to "leap" to a conclusion that something out of the ordinary that can't be proven exists... purely on faith. Being skeptical and not lending credence to one or a million different gods is not making a leap of any kind. It is not moving at all. Your definition of agnosticism is also wrong. Agnosticism refers to the idea that we can have no true discerning knowledge of the existence of Gods/the divine.

The burden of proof lies on the one making the positive assertion that something exists/has an effect/interacts with known entities in the physical world, etc, not the person who pays it no mind or doubts. That's logic 101. While I understand what you're trying to say, it's illogical. I could by the same turn make up any imaginary monster like a horse with two heads that eats babies and you can't irrefutably prove that I didn't really see it. It doesn't make it any less ridiculous.

Yeah. So prove to me irrefutably that fairies don't exist. Go on.You can't do it. There may not be irrefutable proof that a creator did exist, but there is no irrefutable proof that a creator did/does not exist. You ARE making a leap of faith by not believing in Zeus. However unlikely it may be that Zeus exists, prove it to me.Agnosticism is: I don't see any real evidence for a God but I don't know for certain whether one God or multiple Gods exist.Atheism is: I BELIEVE there is no God.

It's like in an experiment or finding any truth in life, you assume the null hypothesis.. that there is no effect or that a claim that something exists has to be verified. It is therefore not making any leap whatsoever to assume it doesn't exist until proven. It's just common sense and the way we all deal with everything else in the world, other than religion. If I say I have a pill to cure cancer, you'd want proof. You wouldn't be making a "leap of faith" to not believe my unverified claim.
CynicalSolo23 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
If we follow your logic than that means you are making a leap of faith to not believe in Zeus, Mithra, Odin, etc. etc. Would you consider that a leap? Would you consider not believing in fairies being a leap in faith or really even A BELIEF. No, you'd say "I don't think they're real" or to be more scientific and intellectually honest "i do not see any proof that yet exists to lend support to this particular claim," Basic logic dictates that the burden of proof lies on the positive assertion. |
