yeah... you would not be able to play like them without nails. then again I won't grow mine. that would just be too much fuss. so bassically I understand what you meant now, but I stick to my: keep your nails clean and short :) It just wouldn't suit me in my everyday life (even though i'm a programmer :).

Also, although flamenco guitar is different to classical, classical guitar does have it's roots in places like Spain and Italy.Look up any video by Andres Segovia, John Williams (the guitarist, not the composer) or Julian Bream... 3 VERY famous and VERY highly respected classical guitarists and you will see they use nails. Look up any other professional classical guitarist and almost certainly you will see the same. I have studied classical guitar at University level.

The vast majority of serious classical guitarists use nails. Some don't.. Tarrega (a famous composer) didn't and those who continue from his school of teaching dont. Some guitarists have limitations, if they are a professional carpenter or mechanic for example having long nails could be a nuisance. But they are in the minority. Steel string fingerstyle guitarists usually use finger picks in my experience whereas make very little difference to the sound to an electric guitar.

And so that you not misunderstand me... I also finger pick with short nails. And it sounds fine. And I've never seen anyone who did it differently. So I find it to be kinda weird that suddenly everyone cares about nails that much... * notices a video redirecting to someone playing flamenco and decides to react *Yes, you need nails for spanish stuff. Did you mean THAT under classical guitar?
SVKmellow (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Googled that up :) ? What do you understand under classical guitar anyway? My friend actually studied classical guitar for a loooong time and he NEVER cut his fingernails to weird shapes. In fact I've met just one person who really grew his fingernails to play guitar and he used those for STRUMMING not picking. I just don't get your point. Maybe redirect me to a video of someone playing that would show me why you need nails or what style you mean... I will just use picks and short nails, sorry.

If you were a classical guitarist, then you would most certainly bother with nails. Picks are great, but only for certain styles. Nails are essential for classical guitar.
