Home handyman Gavin Shoebridge has made his own electric car from parts that he has fitted into an old 1987 Mitsubishi Tredia. 12 Deep cycle batteries, an electric motor and some electronic bits and bobs - a little bit of research - he now has a car that can cruise around without the need to fill up at the gas station. He was getting sick of paying $50 for gas every week.Good on ya Gav - we expect more people to do similar. He has video's of how he did it on YouTube

Yeah, you might be better off with a smaller car, but if you do try it, use a higher torque motor if you're going offroad so you don't have to use as large a gearbox.

controller costs and sundry components have dropped precipitously in cost since he did his thing. He also, being a kiwi had to import a @#$@# load of stuff and that adds massively to the price.

hey.. In India my uncle manufactures Lead acid / NiCd batteries. I know a battery (regular automotive 12V ones) cost around INR8000. yup thats approx US$200 at the current exchange rates. And the electric motor that might cost me a INR10k..thats abt US$200.. will have to see where i could get that controller though.. hmm.. that sounds like a plan.. where can i find more details. Thanks in advance..:)

Wunderbar... Kiwis are grand !Just one thing, cost is fine, but it's only oil free when it's 100% sun, wind or water powered. Most of NZ comes from water and geothermal, still 33% of it is oil generated electricity. Sadly, our electricity is 78% Nuclear, and water powered is more like 15-20.So here we have to depend on our own to produce our electricity. House energy.

With 12k you can buy a new electric car, like G-WIz, or other.
