@MaabudZ Found this info. on another page: The melody is from Bach's St. Matthew Passion("O Haupt Voll Blut und Wunden"). (Kids, if this isn't correct, don't blame me; someone else posted this!)

@letsif Really? Do you know the actual source, i.e. what is the Bach piece this comes from? I'd like to check it out. Thanks

He has given us a beautiful song which I've always enjoyed. Still, I just viewed Darrell Scotts' version and this one (for me) doesn't have the power and soul of Scotts' interpretation. To each his own certainly, but check it out. You might have a pleasant surprise in store.

Don't have a friend who feels at ease: Don't know a dream that's not been shattered: Or driven to it's knees. But it's all right, all right, We've lived so well so long : Still, when I think of the road we're traveling on, I wonder what went wrong.

This should actually be called "German Tune", since the melody is by J.S. Bach. Paul does justice to this exquisite music by re-fashioning it in his inimitable American urban way of expression.

Paul Simon has several unusual gifts - a feeling for beautiful melodies - solidarity with the common man - a popular poet - a New Yorkers' abilty to assimilate musical influences from near and far - and he's a beautiful guy ( I used to think the "Starsky" character in Starsky and Hutch was almost a clone).- I wish Paul Simon had set the part to music and it could have been a musical about the music industry. |
